Allow One Course of Required Natural Science Pair to Meet
General Education Requirement (EX)
This action removes the restriction that certain Natural Science
course pairs must both be taken before they can be used in the General Education
Natural Science requirement. For example, if CHEM 110 was taken but CHEM 111
was not, this action will allow CHEM 110 to be used in the General Education
requirement without CHEM 111. Current course pairs with restrictions are: ASTRO 010/011, CHEM 110/111, CHEM 0112/113 and MICRB 106/107.
WARNING: A common mistake in doing this exception is the wrong
title is chosen. Often times, it's assumed the General Education Natural Sciences
title should be selected because that's where the course is meant to go. If
the course is an approved GN course, it will fall into the Natural Sciences
category automatically once it's released from the pair by using the correct
title listed below. Follow directions below to select the correct requirement
title.
Step 1: Fill in the required fields:
- Course Taken By Student - enter the course abbreviation and number of the course allowed to be used in General Education in the Name and Number fields (ex. CHEM110).
- Exchange with - enter the course abbreviation and number of the course allowed to be used in General Education in the Name and Number fields (ex. CHEM 110).
- Subrequirement Title - choose the subrequirement title that lists the Natural Science course pair that is being waived. For example, choose the subrequirement title of "CHEM 110/111 or CHEM 106/111 - SCHEDULEE" to allow CHEM 110 to count in GN without CHEM 111. These subrequirement titles are listed under the heading of "CURRENT SCHEDULE" in the drop down box. The subrequirement title is displayed in this field.
- Assign - enter #
Step 2: Fill in the optional fields, if desired:
- Remove Degree/Major Restriction - when an exception is entered, it only applies to the program on which it was entered. By checking this box, the specific program information will be removed from the exception.
- Message Displayed on Audit - describe the exception (27 characters). This message will also be displayed on the view/modify exception screen and on the audit in the sub-requirement where the exception is being applied.
- Date Authorized - defaults to the current date. This is an updatable field so the date can be changed if needed.
- Notes: (Not displayed on audit) - text field for comments about the exception (150 characters). Anyone viewing the exception can see these notes. This field is NOT displayed on the audit.
- Date Range - enter the date range of the course that is to be exchanged (ex. if the course was taken in the spring semester 2004, SP2004 is entered in the first field and SP2004 is entered in the second field).
Step 3: Save the exception:
- Select the "Submit Changes."
Step 4: Scroll down to the end of the page to:
- Enter another exception for this student - select "Back to Exception List."
- Add another exception for this student but in a different program - select "Back to Program List."
- Enter an exception for a different student - select "Choose New Student."
- To request a degree audit for this student - select the ERISDN link in the left-frame menu.
